A recent study indicates that a California proposition permitting sports wagering at indigenous casinos and racecourses could generate substantial revenue for the state. However, it would also necessitate increased regulatory and enforcement expenditures.
The proposition, put forth last November by a coalition of eighteen Native American tribes, was analyzed by the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO). Their assessment revealed both potential advantages and drawbacks.
The LAO remains uncertain about the extent to which sports betting participation would rise if the state legalized it. Nevertheless, they anticipate that it could generate tens of millions of dollars annually.
The proposition would authorize tribal casinos and state-operated racetracks to offer sports wagering. It would also allow tribal casinos to introduce roulette and craps. Currently, tribal casinos are restricted to slot machines, lottery games, and specific card games.
